The IH Toronto TEFL Certificate (IHT TEFL Cert.)

The International House TEFL Certificate is a one-week introductory ESL course designed to equip new teachers with the skills necessary to survive in the classroom for those who don’t need to/are unable to commit to a full CELTA, TESL or TESOL course (or would like to see what it’s like first). Unlike most introductory courses, the IHT TEFL Certificate includes observed teaching practice and is delivered over five days totalling 30 actual classroom hours.

The IHT TEFL Certificate provides a grounding in ELT methodology, language analysis and teaching practice. It is offered to anybody as a 5 day course, covering the basics of current ELT practice and theory. The course covers similar areas as the CELTA/TESL/TESOL courses but in less detail, and includes observation of experienced teachers and approximately one hour of teaching practice with foreign students.

This course is intended for first language English speakers (without necessarily a post-secondary education) who wish to teach English mainly overseas, or second language speakers with a desire to teach English mainly in their home country. The IHT Certificate is not a formal qualification for Canada.

Who takes the TEFL program?

Often, university graduates teach abroad for a year to see if they like teaching, to travel without expense or to help pay off their student loans. In many cases, these graduates go overseas without any initial training and find the job to be very difficult. The TEFL program is an excellent way to get a brief glimpse as to how it feels to lesson plan, to teach and what to expect.

There are also those who already have a job and would like to get training, but do not have time for a 4 or 10 week program. This program is perfect for those who are leaving shortly.

The TEFL is a perfect way to see what you will be learning in extended courses before committing to the time and money involved. The TEFL will show you whether teaching English is right for you before signing up for a full program.
